Jerry...Had a similar situation. Driving back from West Virginia to New york. Stopped in New Jersey for gas...no re - start. Finally got started, albeit poorly, by moving distributor while cranking the engine. Made the last 60 miles home. Found timing chain had jumped a tooth, or two.
Being an older Dodge van with engine totally inside, it easily allowed cranking and turning the distributor to be a one man job.
Hindsight...Probably would have made it home without re - fueling, but feared getting caught up in N.Y.C. traffic and running out.
