The best advice I was ever given regarding engine start up is also the least practical in our situation. A local marine diesel mechanic was talking to me about the subject & says that the most important thing to do on start up of a new engine is pre heat the oil. He has some kind of a container that he's built where he can heat the oil using a tiger torch but as you can imagine...for our purposes it's a little on the messy & dangerous side :)
His thought is that upon initial start up of a new engine...that's the absolute largest amount of debris that will circulate through any engine yet if you start the engine cold, the oil just completely bypasses the filter & you circulate everything through all your new bearings until the oil is thin enough to not bypass.
Sounds like good advice. So how can one safely heat oil?
