The second series crash box or 'after type' transmissions are inherently noisy. When taken apart there does not seem that there is anything wrong internally and will annoyingly work for many more years like Clint said. If you have a boat I would recommend using the second series crash box as an anchor and find either a first series non synchro or an m37 synchronized transmission for your truck.
An early 'up to' type non synchro will bolt up to the bell housing that had an 'after type' transmission with no modifications. The pto from a second series non synchro will fit the 'up to' transmission with the proper spacer. The spacer is about a quarter of an inch thick.
If you would like to put in a synchronized transmission you will need one from an m-37. You will also need the appropriate pto and transmission tunnel for the floor to accommodate the transmission. The shift lever from a later 420 power wagon synchronized transmission will fit in the top of the m37 transmission to make it look like a later 420 power wagon synchro.
I hope my ramblings answered your questions.
