thanks to those who helped. i did the following. installed new points and condenser in my spare distributor. set points on bench with feeler gauge. i reattached ground from body cowl to engine block. ground strap bolt had vibrated out. i bought a 0.8 ohm ballast resistor required for using a msd coil with points. i then made a jumper wire from the dist to the resistor. resistor to an alligator clip. hooked clip to pos on batt terminal and she fired up. i believe that the wire that goes from the key switch and then through the firewall filter is the problem. the filter could be bad. i am going to bypass the filter and go directly to the key switch. the switch is good. tried a spare and that did not fix first time. unsure if it was the ground, or if it was the filter, wire, coil connection. i had extremely hot coils until i bypassed the filter so im figuring that was it. does anyone know why that would cause the coil to heat up?
