I would add to what Chris said. To pop it out of gear the trans has to not be binding. No pressure from the engine or the drive shaft. In that sweet spot you can ease it into the next gear. You can do the same downshifting, but it takes a lot of feel for the right rpms, goosing the throttle just right to raise the rpms to the sweet spot. It takes some time and experience to get the downshifting right. Start by double clutching like the others have said.
