I took some of the girls from my Girl Scout Troop up Camels Hump, the 3rd tallest mt. in Vermont, at 4,083'. Round trip was 7 miles, and 3 of it is extremely grueling. We had lunch at the summit, a bald top in the alpine zone. The weather today was perfect with incredible views 360 degrees. Just down from the summit is the site of a B24 that crashed in 1943 on a training mission. 9 of the 10 crew died on impact, the 10th was injured. It was over 40 hours before rescuers could get to the site, by which time the survivor was badly frostbitten. He ended up losing both arms and both legs.
The wing section is all that remains, as the rest was removed from the mountain. That must have been a challenge, they must have used helicopters.
The wing section is upside down, and a landing gear is still visible. Pretty sobering. I was surprised that there is no plaque or anything to commemorate the crew.
