I can relate. I became a ME after almost a decade as a forester. I got the ME degree when I was 35 because I had started a family and wanted to buy these people a house! I also am a private pilot and wanted to be able to fly my planes. There are lots of other toys, like the Power Wagon ('53). I'm almost 60 now and I might be retired (not looking too hard, and as has been mentioned, you tend to get specialized, and I like living here), and it has worked out pretty well. One thing is that being a means to an end, the job was never my top priority, so my career could have been better, but almost any engineering job pays 1.5x or more than a technician job. My career could have been better, but my life couldn't be better. Everything is a trade-off, so you really need to first decide what you really want - how you want to live.
Best of luck to you.
