Why only shim the top?

Is one of the problems with the axle sleeve bearing in the housing wearing, off center knuckles?

Anybody ever sweep in the knuckle housing to sleeve bearing with a dial indicator?

Or is there so much play in the tracta/ c-v joints tat it can't be a problem?
