My two cents...I work in the environmental field and I tell all our interns and young folks right out of college that to get ahead today you need a masters or higher for the "really good jobs". Unlike when I went to college most of my friends went to the mines or mills. So the pool of college educated folks was small. Today, a college education is equal to my high school education since darn near everyone has one.
Whatever you decide to do pick something you really really like, I have run into more than a few people that did a undergradute to doctorate and skipped the masters altogether. But, since your so close to the oil and gas fields I would think doing something with that or a satellite job would be the best thing to do.
