I think that's a wise move on the studs. I don't think I've ever successfully used an easy-out (square or spiral) to remove a stuck bolt. The easy-out always breaks. If all else fails, there are companies that will use EDM (electric discharge machining) to remove anything that's broken off in any hole in any kind of casting, but I'm sure that really gets into big bucks. I had some cylinder head studs on a cute little 65 cu in 4-cyl hercules motor that I broke off and attempted to drill out, and I made a real hash of it by the time I was done. I did manage to get them out, but I'd buggered up the holes so bad that I ended up putting in the next size larger of studs. That's where I learned that studs are hard and cast iron is soft, and that a common drill bit won't even drill a stud, and a top-quality bit will walk out of the stud and into the cast.
