Try this first: Take a screwdriver and bend the lip of the water distribution tube a little away from the block so that you can grab the lip with a pair of needle nose vice grips. Then you can pull on the vice grips, maybe even with the slide hammer and a hook, if one came with the slide hammer.
Modifying your tools is a last resort. You often ruin the tool for other uses.
If you need an adapter, weld the head of a fine thread bolt/nut to the head of a course thread bolt/nut depending on what you need.
Now's the time to start to learn to weld.
A slide hammer is a good tool to have in your arsenal, I'm not so sure about the hook. I've not needed one.
