That's crazy. Before any of the "freons" were invented, they used ammonia and sulfur dioxide as refrigerants and they worked just fine. I had an old GE kitchen refrigerator made around 1940 that used sulfur dioxide. It worked great up until about 10 years ago when I put it in a shed that got smashed by the snow and ruined it. I know those gases are poisonous, but they're cheap and reliable and don't hurt the ozone layer. I don't recall ever hearing of anyone getting poisoned when their kitchen fridge sprang a leak, either.
