If you come across a copy of TM9-2855, "Operation and Maintenance of Ordnance Materiel in Extreme Cold (O to -65 F)", you may find it interesting. It predates the M-series just a bit (1951) but it shows you the line of thinking that went into the design of all these "arctic kits". The Ordnance Department was clearly preparing to fight the Russians, in the dead of winter if need be.
