12 volts will burn up a 6 volt fuel gauge quickly. There's a good chance that has happened already if somebody jumped it with a 12 volt battery. If the gauge works, protect it like the family jewels.

Some people use a resistor with the 6 volt fuel gauge, but I'm not sure how well that works, never done that. 12 volt fuel gauges are pretty easy to come by, 6 volt gauges are not.
