That V-16 in the pic is the OHV first series (1930-37). Maybe the prettiest engine ever built in the U.S. Then in 1938 it was replaced with the second series, a 135-degree flathead that was a lot more ordinary (if you can call any V-16 ordinary).
The only problems with these engines were that they got about 5 miles per gallon, and working on the internals is a real pain because they're so tight inside.
Our 1947 Packard has a 356 cu. inch straight 8 with nine main bearings - the smoothest engine I've ever experienced.
If I ever got the chance to get one of these engines, I'd do it in a heartbeat...
