From what I understand Loblolly Pine is one of the species marketed in the grouping southern yellow pine, typically sold as treated lumber for decks, etc. This lumber can have lots of knots because they are plantation grown young trees - fast growing and harvested fairly quickly..
What I like are older trees in the forest that have grown slow and thus have less knots. I like them 18-26" diameter. Some of the big ones, 30" plus, are known as "bull" trees. THose are the ones I would use to make the 2X12's out of.
