Its interesting to see what all they come up with on the studies. I think it depends on how you use the truck that would determine the cost of ownership. I just got back from my first long trip in my 2005 5.9 Cummins and all I can say is WOW! 20.3mpg on one leg of the trip and 22.5mpg on the other. My 1500 Ram wouldn't get close to this. I had power to spare. I have several friends with Hemi trucks and they don't get near the MPG the 5.9 Cummins gets.
Hook a trailer up to either truck and theres no contest. The Hemi gets thirsty real fast when worked hard. My 360 1500 Ram was the same way.
It costs more for a oil change with the Cummins then the gas engine but you can go double or triple the miles on the diesel vs gas and that alone will save you money.
I agree with Paul that the diesels are a ticking time bomb on something costly but they generally go 100's of thousands miles more then a gas engine. That would probably offset the costs of a Hemi gas rebuild.
Theres always the story of a Cummins blowing up with not many miles and theres always the story of the V8 gas engine going 400,000 miles. SO we come back around to where we started............
