My brother's home was an older one (early eightees) and they had performed a bunch of work on the lot, but they still lived in the woods on a cul-de-sac.
They had about twenty minutes from the time they smelled smoke to the time that they left...and they had to walk out over burnt ground...
The fire started very near the house. You can see from what is left that the various firefighters worked hard to save it (cut trees, retardent on the ground, etc.).
The new home will incorporate a lot of the newer design ideas... :)
Knowing how dry things have been (and are) is part of the reason that they got out. They had a plan and had practiced.
