In theory it could but you would be over-volting it.
Your best solution is a single dropper resistor before the main power in terminal on the gauge - the one used on 12 volt military trucks would be about right.
When you rewire the gauge to sender line, use a two core cable, one core per terminal, and avoid any joints. That way you get exactly the same length of exactly the same cable in each circuit.
There is a calibration procedure in the 39 / 40 manual for the gauge if it needs adjustment to get the range setting right.
