You can't a socket in there, it's too big to go through the radiator hole.

Or use the fan blade?
Or pry the ring gear teeth around with a carpenter's flat pry bar, the hooked end works well.
The most common place to rust up is the valve to the=ir guides. You can break the tops of the 'mushroom tappets' if you pry too hard.
12 years with a hood closed and an air cleaner may not be too bad. One year with the hood an d head off causes grief.
