Well another day is behind us. We went from Russ's house in Evanston Wyoming to Winnemucca Nevada. Started the day off right at Russ's with a hearty breakfast of bacon, scrambled eggs, toast and lots of coffee. Thanks again to Russ and Rebecca for the warm welcome. When we left, Russ took us to the roundhouse and showed us around. Very cool. We were about to leave when a man from the Evanston Public Works Dept stopped us and asked if there was ANYTHING else we wanted to see. I was getting antsy to get on the road, but with an offer like that.... He then asked us if we wanted to drive the railroad turntable. No way we could pass that up. It was very cool, it is electric over hydrailic, and controlled with a double acting hydraulic valve. Push the handle in the direction you wanted to go. You dont get that chance every day.
We were supposed to meet up with Brent from Nev for a late lunch at about 2:00. Unfortunately, he was called out to a fire and we didnt meet. As we were heading across the Bonneville
salt Flats, the truck began to run hotter. I hadnt thought to bring any water or antifreeze along. We ran 35 down the shoulder for awhile, then pulled over and shut it down till it cooled down. It wasnt boiling over, but was running hotter than it had been. We repeated that dance several times, and finally came to a rest area. We pulled in next to a white Dodge pickup. There was a young man standing next to the Dodge, and came right over when he saw our truck. I mentioned we hadbeen overheating and were goint to cool it down awhile then add some water. He told us he had blown an oil seal and was spewing oil. He offered us some antifreeze he had. I told him I would trade him some oil for it. Man his eyes lit up and we made the swap, both of us amazed at our luck! After we cooled her down, and topped her off with antifreeze, she ran cool again. The guy with the blown oil seal was wanting to get to Wendover. He left before us, and we didnt see him again, so I guess the oil got him where he needed to get.
Somewhere in Nevada as a pickup passed us I heard a stone hit our glass. When we got to Winnemucca I noticed a stone chip on the drivers side wing vent, which had been open.
We got a room at a Motel 6. We asked the desk clerk for a reccomendation for dinner. We got to the place, and gave my name. the place was packed and noisy. Then we see the first item on the menu was Steak and Lobster, for $75. Dan, I couldnt do that to you. We bugged out of there, and ended up at a quiet Mexican restuarant. The food was great, and the total for us both was WELL under the price of the Steak and Lobster at the other place.
Tomorrow we need to get to the San Francisco Airport at 2:00 to pick up a rental car. Then on to the finish line in Boulder creek!
Enjoy the pictures!
