If you have a vacuum system, stick with it. Not perfect, but better than the available alternatives.
It's not too hard to scrounge up the pieces for a vacuum system if you're willing to spend a little money.
The best option of all is don't drive when you need windshield wipers. Shouldn't be much of a problem down there in Texas.
