This way you can be right there. I've used a pair of pliers to touch between posts, or two keys on a ring pinched together.
Funny thing though, the coil in the solenoid can act like a hmmmm- coil ! And make a good jolt. Ummmm, I think that means that the windings are good!
But most often, the solenoid clattering is a dead battery.
Buzzing, instead of clattering, may be the starter spinning wihtout engaging?
