sounds like coil is hooked up backwards, should be + to ignition switch,- to points.It'll work backwards, but not for long or very well.
there should be a ballast resistor in the hot(+) lead,this will make points last longer. Also bypass ballast resistor w/ wire to starter relay , this will give hottest spark while cranking but you may need a diode in this line to prevent shorting out ignition system through the starter motor-if it fires up but dies when you let go of starter switch.You can get a diode at radio shack for about $1. E-mail me for a sketch if required, it'll take me an hour to scan it in and e-mail it to you, i'm better with wire strippers than I am at the keybord.
