The V-6, and I've had Fords, Chrysler and Chevy, are good engines with plenty of power FOR LIGHT APPLICATIONS.
They were not designed for a truck that is 3 tons empty and over 4 tons gross, not counting a loaded trailer.
I ran all these V-6's in heavily loaded service trucks.
The largest old Dodge I feel that can be powered by a V-6 are the 1941's. They weigh considerably less than the M37 and the V-6 would make a thrifty engine for mainly on-pavement use. I have seen a couple of 1941's with various V-6's and it works OK. But I feel they are at the weight limit. The 231 cubie Buick made a good around town and highway engine, but it was underpowered when the 1941 was loaded down. A V-6 is tempting from a fun around town standpoint for a 1941, but I doubt you'd be happy with it in an M37.
I realize the Chevy 4.3 can be had in a marine version, and can be installed w/o all the computer crap. It might be the one exception to the rule, but are you willing to spend that kind of money when the Chevy 350 and Dodge 318/340/360 have been proven to be reliable and of ample power?
