All cylinders 40-45# ? I'd try a different gauge. While wet (oil)tests supposedly test rings, it seems to give random results- real bad holes still read low, all cylindres read higher due to the higher compression caused by adding volume of oil to cylinder, some oil is splashed out through valves causing erratic improvements of compression. I'd evaluate rings based on oil consumption, smoke on acceleration,or blow by from breather system. And Re: doing valves only on old engine causing rings to go out- if your intake guides are so bad that they act as a PCV system by sucking the blowby out of crankcase through guides, rings may be bad already but won't show till guides are fixed, then "valve job made bottom end go bad".
