I had a similar problem, and it turned out to be a coroded firewall bulkhead connector. To see if this is the problem, take a voltage reading (with the engine running at about 1400 rpm) at the battery, and inside the cab. The voltages should be within a tenth of a volt or so. If the voltage is different, the voltage regulator is trying to compensate for the difference (voltage drop). To remedy, an electrical shop suggeseted installing a relay off the voltage regulator so that the regulator is sensing underhood voltage instead of sensing the voltage drop across the bulkhead connector.
