You said it well! I have a degree in physics and I still do stupid things sometimes. I was pulling birch trees down in my front yard (to avoid hitting the house or the driveway). I was using my M37 AHSU3 hydraulic winch. I chained the rear of the M37 to a big tree. I used a pulley to avoid the tree coming right onto the M37. I may have forgotten to put the side of the pulley (sheave?) back into place with the thumbscrew. Anyways the side plate got bent back about 90 degrees.
I use high quality McKissick pulleys rated at 16 metric tons breaking strength. According to my hydraulic pressure gauge I was only pulling at about 7000 lb, but something broke!
Immovable objects/irresistable force contests break things.
