7.50 and 8.25 x 20 tires are generally larger in diameter than 9.00x16 tires. My grandfathers cousin had a '48 B1PW that he replaced the original 9.00x16 tires and wheels on. He used Ford AA 20-inch Budd wheels and 7.50x20 tires to get extra ground clearance. Some of these old Ford wheels were the correct width for those tires (generally the newer they were the wider they were). He just drove out the rivets and moved the centers in to retain the stock track width of the truck. They could no longer be dualed up.
When I eventually got the truck, it had 8.25x20 tires. Calculated out, they gave a 10% increase in road speed due to the added rolling radius. Compare that to a 20% increase by changing from 5.83:1 gearing to 4.89:1 gearing.
So, I have done it both ways, and no, I have not noticed a loss in power out of the stock 230 L-head.
