I had to cut up an old underground oil tank next to my house to get it out. I assumed/hoped that it wouldn't explode when I took a torch to it, but just to be sure I took a couple feet of fuse, stuck the end down into the hole, lit it, and stood back. As expected, it didn't blow up, but that made me feel a lot better when I got on top of it with the torch and started cutting. A person could do the same with a gas tank, just to be sure.
