The original idea for the AR15/M16 was for it to be a low-cost. efficient military weapon that could be sold to other countries as well as utilized here in the US. Back they were designed, nobody thought they'd become a popular civilian weapon.
But, here it is 60-some years later, and... at least they've been improved quite a bit, don't jam all the time, don't have to be kept spotlessly clean, etc. Still cheaply made and ugly, but efficient.
And, if you're a big AK rifle fan, but have to have a really good one, get yourself a Valmet. Made in Finland, nice high-quality woodwork, and even the metal seems upgraded from the standard Russian/Chinese/Bulgarian versions. And available in .223 as well...
