For some reason Chrysler kept the piston design basically the same and (generally) changed engine capacity with the stroke - longer stroke = shorter rods using the same block and piston. By using after-market pistons you can use longer rods and that gives you a greater piston dwell time at TDC and BDC allowing better burning of the fuel/air mixture, better cylinder charging, developing more horsepower and safely allowing more rpm's.
