The deepest part of the formed cavity should go just a smidge past the plane of the floor of the counterbore accepting the perimeter of the core plug.
Don't overwork it with a bunch of hammer blows. If you don't like how one turned out, remove and replace it.
I have never had one leak. Yes, as someone else mentioned, non-hardening sealer on the edge.
