When I was an automotive instructor I taught theory of operation, design, and construction of automotive systems and components. Good diagnostic skills are based on a proper understanding of all that. Otherwise you are guessing, and earn the title of parts replacer.
An important part of teaching automotive theory is the teaching of the applicable science involved in the system, component, or process. As an example, bleeding brakes is accomplished much more effectively and quickly when the repairer has a thorough understanding of the mechanical system operation and the relevant fluid physics.
