If the block or head is cracked, or the head gasket has failed, it will allow water in the combustion chamber. During compression strokes water is force passed pistons into the crank case. No longer than your engine ran, you may have very little water in the crank case.
On one of my failed head gasket experiences, I drove the truck about 10 miles before it finally gave up. The starter wouldn't turn the engine over on a compression stroke, so I remove the plugs not knowing what was wrong. I tried turning the engine over again and it shot water about 20 feet in the air. Got a new head gasket, pulled the head, no carbon anywhere! Put on the gasket, drove it home.
