Took my 61 WM300 for a ride to a friends house and didn't make it there. She quit on me. I thought I ran out of gas so I put some in and she still wouldn't start. I had a problem with the ballast resistor a while back with similar symptoms. It looked like it was cracked so I replaced it and still no start. I checked the spark on the points, good. I checked the spark at the coil, seemed week. I also noticed that the ballast resistor was smoking when I left the key in the on position for more than a minute or two. Checked the voltage at the between the resistor leads (11.8v). The resistor ohm'ed out at .9 ohms. She appears to be getting gas. I hit her with a shot of ether and nothing. I had to put the tow strap on her and the wife pulled me home with my daughter's F150 (its an auto, she can't drive the Cummins (standard). Anyone have any ideas what might be causing this?
