Is it a sudden kick or can you feel the pedal going up and down under light pressure? A sudden kick can often be caused by contamination causing the shoes to grab (often from a build up of brake shoe dust or a wheel cylinder starting to leak) where pedal pulsing is usual for out of round drum/s. You could try jacking wheels and spinning them against light pedal pressure - if any are out of round they will have tight spots.
Personally, I would do this first to check for out of round, then pull the drums and inspect wheel cyls for leakage, then clean at the least.
