David,
We have the Invisible Fence (the name brand) system and it is great. We have it installed to cover about 5 acres around the house on the farm here.
Our dogs go out and do whatever they want, and in 20 years we have only had one "breakout".
When it is raining and at night, it is really nice to not worry that they are going to go off chasing a deer or something. We just let them out.
The size of the enclosure is not a $ factor as the "antenna' wire is cheap that lays on the perimeter you select.
The controller/shocker on the collars are now really compact, and the transmitter is in my machine shed.
Most dogs are very easy to train. They are very scared of electricity, and so mine don't go near the perimeter now.
I have known people who let the battery run down and so the dog has a dummy collar on them, but don't know it.
