First check it to see if the heater leaks. They can be cleaned with a water/muriatic acid mix if they are just dirty.
And, don't sneer at the idea of just installing it and putting in radiator stop leak. It works and has saved me a lot of money. Maybe, plumb the heater into the cooling system without installing the heater in the cab and let the stop leak work.
Soldering a leak closed is not a big deal and a good skill to learn if you don't already know how.
If you need a re-core, find an appropriate size core or complete one that will fit.
$340 is more than half the cost of getting a full-size radiator, which is ten times as big, re=cored.
