I would suggest that if the starter motor conductors have somehow been wired directly through the key switch rather than the heavy terminals of the solenoid you now have frozen contacts in the key switch.
The momentary contacts of the key switch and the light gauge wiring are for the solenoid coil control wiring only.
The high amperage of the starter motor would freeze the contacts, burn and melt down that small wiring in only a few seconds.
You could test or ring out that key switch, but I think it is due for replacement.
