I don't know why it happens, but I've also found that the holes under the seat don't line up with the bolts. Is that the case on all FFPW's? Has the cab shifted?
Nick, don't take the truck to an electrical shop to see if the generator is working.
Just put a volt meter on the battery and read the resting voltage, should be around 12.6 Then start the truck. The meter should read 14-15 volts on a running truck.
Auto Zone will do a check for free, but why bother? Other than wiring and switches, there are really only two things to cause a problem: Generator or voltage regulator. There's easy ways to test both.
The problem with having a shop do it, besides the fact they have an interest in selling you something, is you don't learn for next time.
Meters are three bucks at Harbor Freight. Sometimes, they give them away with purchases. I have a bunch. I would give you one (or a couple) if you were nearby.
