Without getting too technical a ignition coil works by inducing a current on the secondary coil by a collapsing magnetic field from the primary coil, or low voltage coil.
The primary winding is saturated when the points are closed allowing the circet to be completed. When the points open the magnetic field collapse across the secondary winding and induces a high voltage current about 22,000 volts.
You can do a bench test on your neighbors cats to see how well it is working with just a battery and some jumper clips.
