my guess is the points are not opening or closing. As a matter of fact, I'd bet you a pizza (with beer) that the coil is getting warm because it is getting power, but the points are not opening at all, or much since the engine is not running. The way is makes a spark is by putting power into the coil which is an inductor. When the current goes to zero (like when the points are open, that change in current in the coil creates a voltage. In our case enough voltage to make a spark.
Clint is right, look and see what the points are doing! They need to open and close, or no spark for you!
