you could use wood, but the problem will be the hinge point and what bears the load. I used 2.5" square tube to space above the rise on the frame, and then a U channel for structural integrity. At some point you could sandwich wood in there for soft contact between that and the bed frame,but I don't see any advantage. It depends on your planned capacity, mine is about 4000, and I've had 3400 in it. the dump has a 7000il capacity. I don't see any advantage of using wood since it cuts deep into dump capacity.
Use steel and it can all be done easily without any frame welding or cutting. You need a good reason to use wood.
