My first case of dealing with the heat riser was one stuck in the "summer" (which I think you mean by "open") position, on a Tucker Sno-Cat of all things. Drove it up the mountain just fine, with throttle wide open, but coming down, at part throttle, it iced up until I barely had enough power to keep going. I still can't imagine why anyone would set the heat riser of a sno-cat to "summer" position. In that case, not only was no exhaust blowing up towards the carb, but the entire volume above the deflector was one solid mass of soot.
