Anybody know if this is legit? Got a letter in the mail soliciting a $25/yr membership in return for which there is some vague language about helping the sheriffs do good things, plus a bumper sticker and window decal. The letterhead says it's from one "Sheriff Gary Raney / Shoshone County / Wallace ID", but of course he's not our sheriff. He claims elsewhere to be the Ada county sheriff. So why the attempt to make people who don't know better think he's their local county sheriff? It certainly sounds to me like they're trying to imply that for $25/yr they're selling you a bumper sticker and window decal that, like the infamous "bear" stickers, will cause cops to let you go without a ticket if they pull you over. They never come out and say that, but what's the point of an "organization" that doesn't even have a newsletter, can't be specific about anything they actually do, and yet gives you bumper and window stickers? And I guess the second part of the question is, supposing that's all true, do the stickers work to magically repel traffic cops and state troopers?
