I'd assume the machine shop would be doing basically the same thing, just with more sophisticated electronic equipment.
Onetime, I needed a hub removed. I thought it would need some sort of press, so I took it to a machine shop. He just beat out the hub with a big hammer. So, I basically paid shop rate for his knowledge.
