A lot of it is if the vehicle can get some speed and get on top of the sand. Sort of like planing in a boat. It doesn't take a lot of speed.
Heavier/slower vehicles just tend to claw through the sand. I guess that is what a FFPW would do.
We have some big dunes in California. I'm not going to try it though. Off-road recovery bills can be enormous.
