Joe,
My poly with mechanical fuel pump was putting out 7psi. This is way too high for the nos Stromberg WW3 carb we installed. Gas is overpowering the needle and flooding the carb. Internet research says 2.5psi is plenty, and some say too much. I installed a cheap fuel pressure regulator and set it at 4-5psi. Went for a test ride. Truck still backfires on acceleration, lacks power, and floods coming up hills. Never exceeded 2,500rpms. When I got back, gas was flooding out the base of the carb.
I dialed the regulator back to the lowest setting it can go without reducing to zero psi. It idled better, but is still anemic on acceleration and at high rpms. Could not climb my steep hill in second gear.
I may try a better quality pressure regulator, but at this point I'm pretty sure I need to check the float setting and may have to rebuild the carb.
