The upper and lower shafts have the same basic dimensions for size but the input shaft has an extra machined groove for the thrust washer. The thrust washer is a hardened splined washer that supports the thrsut on the back side of the input gear. Usually this washer is found to be bent or cracked on a xcase that has been worked hard. This applies to the 1.96:1 ratio case. The true WC63 xcase had 1.5:1 ratio and the two shafts are shown in the parts manual to be the same # 927385. The trust washer is # 928999. So it appears that they may be interchangeable after all. The grooved shaft from the 1.96 xcase can still be found but they are a little pricey. I have replaced this shaft on all my rebuilt xcases due to bearing wear or spline wear from the input gear. Terry
